A flag quiz for every country in the world
This flag quiz shows you a flag and four countries. Pick the one it belongs to. Then the flag waves, a map zooms in to show where the country is, and you learn what the colours and symbols mean: why Brazil's flag shows the night sky, why Liechtenstein added a crown, or why Nepal's flag is not a rectangle at all.
All 195 countries are in: the 193 members of the United Nations plus Vatican City and Palestine. Every country you get right earns a stamp in your passport, so there is always one more flag to collect.
How to play
- Guess the country. Look at the flag and tap one of the four countries, or press 1 to 4 on a keyboard.
- See where it is. The map zooms in on the country, and a short note explains the flag.
- The daily ten is the same for every player. It starts with well-known flags and ends with harder ones, always including at least one pair of lookalikes. Share your score with friends.
- Endless mode keeps going until you run out of three hearts. Pick the whole world or practise one continent. Flags you get wrong come back more often, so they stick.
- Your passport collects a stamp for every country you get right, sorted by continent.
Flags that look alike
The hardest part of any guess the flag game is the lookalikes. These are the pairs that trip people up most, and the detail that tells them apart:
Chad and Romania are practically identical. Chad's blue is a touch darker.
Indonesia and Monaco are both red over white. Monaco's flag is squarer.
Indonesia and Poland are mirror images: Poland has white on top.
Ireland and Côte d'Ivoire are mirror images: Ireland starts with green at the pole.
The Netherlands and Luxembourg differ in the blue: Luxembourg's is a lighter sky blue.
Australia and New Zealand: Australia's stars are white, New Zealand's four stars are red.
Senegal and Mali share the same bands, but Senegal has a green star.
Colombia and Ecuador: Ecuador adds a coat of arms with a condor.
Slovakia and Slovenia: Slovakia's shield has a white double cross, Slovenia's shows a mountain.
Haiti and Liechtenstein were identical until 1937, when Liechtenstein added its crown.
Qatar and Bahrain: Qatar is maroon with nine points, Bahrain red with five.
Norway and Iceland swap colours: Norway is red with a blue cross, Iceland blue with a red cross.
Tips to remember flags
Group flags by family. The Nordic countries share an off-centre cross. Many Arab countries use red, white, black and green. Much of West Africa uses the pan-African green, gold and red, first used by Ethiopia. Central American flags often have two blue stripes for the two oceans. Once you know the family, look for the one detail that makes each flag unique: a star, an emblem, a mirrored order or a different shape.
Frequently asked questions
How many flags are in the flag quiz?
All 195 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine.
How does the daily flag quiz work?
Every day there are ten new flags, the same for every player. The first few are well known, the middle ones are trickier and the last three always include a lookalike, such as Chad and Romania. A flag does not come back for weeks.
What is the passport?
Each country you get right gets a stamp in your passport, sorted by continent. It is a long-term goal: try to collect all 195 stamps. Your passport is saved in your browser.
Which flags look the most alike?
Chad and Romania are practically identical. Indonesia and Monaco are both red over white and differ only in shape. Ireland and Côte d'Ivoire are mirror images, and the Netherlands and Luxembourg differ only in their shade of blue.
Can I practise one continent at a time?
Yes. Endless mode lets you pick the whole world or one continent: Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas or Oceania. Flags you get wrong come back more often, so you actually learn them.
