A free Bomberman-style game online
Toybox Bomber is a bomb maze game in the spirit of the classic 1980s arcade games, rebuilt with soft toy-block art, chunky explosions and smooth controls. You play a little yellow-headed toy lost in a maze of pillars and breakable blocks. Drop bombs to blast a path, catch the wind-up mice, jelly sweets and tin robots in your flames, and find the exit door hidden under one of the blocks. There are 50 stages across five toy worlds (Playroom, Sandbox, Snow Day, Garden and Starlight), with a bonus round after every fifth stage. It runs free in your browser, on a computer or a phone, with no download.
How to play
- Drop a bomb where you stand. It goes off after about two and a half seconds and sends flames up, down, left and right.
- Flames break blocks and stop there. The grey pillars and the outer wall cannot be broken and stop flames too.
- Get out of the way. Your own flames hurt you, and so does touching an enemy. Step around a corner before the bomb goes off.
- Chain reactions: a flame that reaches another bomb sets it off at once. Every extra enemy caught in the same chain is worth double the one before.
- Find the door. One block on every stage hides the exit and another hides a power-up. The door opens once every enemy is gone; walk onto it to clear the stage.
- Mind the clock. You have 200 seconds. When time runs out, fast comets arrive that fly straight through blocks.
The bar at the top shows the time left, how many enemies are left, how many bombs you can drop at once and how far your fire reaches, your special powers, which power-up is hidden on this stage and whether you have found it, your score and your lives.
Controls
- Keyboard: WASD (or the arrow keys) to move, J (or Space) to drop a bomb, K to set off a remote bomb, P to pause. Open Settings (⚙) to put any action on the keys you like.
- Phone and tablet: touch and drag anywhere on the left side of the screen to move, tap the 💣 button to drop a bomb and ⚡ to set off a remote bomb.
- Gamepad: the stick or d-pad moves, A drops a bomb, B sets off a remote bomb.
If you would rather use one button, turn on one-button remote in Settings: with the remote control, the bomb button sets off your bombs once all of them are down. Settings also lets you pick the explosion sound.
Turning is forgiving: press a direction a moment before you reach a junction, or when you are slightly past it, and your toy slides into the side passage instead of bumping into the corner.
Power-ups
- Extra bomb: carry one more bomb at a time, up to ten.
- Fire up: your flames reach one tile further.
- Roller skates: walk faster.
- Remote control: your bombs wait until you set them off, oldest first.
- Wall pass: walk through breakable blocks.
- Bomb pass: walk over bombs.
- Flame shield: flames can no longer hurt you. Enemies still can.
- Lucky star: 20 seconds when nothing can hurt you.
Once a power-up is uncovered, keep your flames off it, or it burns. Lose a life and you keep your bombs, fire and skates, but the remote, wall pass, bomb pass and flame shield are gone.
Enemies
- Gumdrop (100 points): a slow jelly sweet that wanders.
- Wind-up Mouse (200): a little quicker, and sometimes comes for you.
- Bouncy Ball (400): fast, but goes wherever it bounces.
- Spinning Top (800): fast and fond of chasing.
- Sock Ghost (1,000): slow, but drifts straight through blocks.
- Dust Puff (2,000): passes through blocks and follows you.
- Tin Robot (4,000): fast, clever and avoids flames.
- Comet (8,000): the fastest of all. It only shows up when time runs out or when you bomb the door.
Play against the computer or a friend
Want a fight instead of a maze? Toybox Bomber Battle is the party version: four toys in one arena, last one standing wins the round and the first to win three rounds takes the match. Play against three computer players, or with a friend on the same keyboard.
Tips: how not to blow yourself up
- Before you drop a bomb, know where you will hide. A corner, out of the bomb's row and column, is always safe.
- With long fire, a straight corridor is a trap. Duck into a side passage instead of running away down the line.
- Let enemies come to you. Drop a bomb in their path and step aside; the slow ones walk right into it.
- Ghosts hiding inside a block die when the block is blasted.
- Once you see the door, keep your flames away from it. Five tougher enemies come out if you hit it.
- In the bonus round nothing can hurt you, so line up chain reactions for huge scores.
Frequently asked questions
Is Toybox Bomber free?
Yes. It is free to play in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with no download and no account.
Can I play Toybox Bomber with a friend?
Yes, in Toybox Bomber Battle, the separate battle game on this site: two players share one keyboard (player 1 on WASD and J, player 2 on the arrow keys and Enter) or use two gamepads, against two computer players. The 50 stages here are for one player.
Is this the official Bomberman game?
No. Toybox Bomber is an original game made in the style of the classic bomb maze games of the 1980s, with its own characters and art. Bomberman is a trademark of Konami, and this site has no connection with it.
How do I clear a stage?
Defeat every enemy, then find the door hidden under one of the breakable blocks and walk onto it. The door stays shut while any enemy is left, and the counter at the top shows how many remain.
What happens if I bomb the door?
Five enemies come out of it, each one type tougher than the worst on the stage. Keep your flames away from the door once you have found it.
What do I keep when I lose a life?
Extra bombs, fire range and roller skates stay with you. The remote control, wall pass, bomb pass and flame shield are lost, as in the classic games.
What happens when the clock runs out?
Each stage has 200 seconds. When time is up, six fast comets appear that fly through blocks and hunt you down, so it is best to finish before then.
Can I change the controls?
Yes. Open Settings with the ⚙ button. Every action can go on two keys of your choice, and the one-button remote option lets the bomb key set off remote bombs too. Your keys are saved in this browser.
Does the game save my progress?
Yes. Your stage, lives, score and power-ups are saved in this browser at the start of every stage. Close the page whenever you like; next time, press Resume and that stage starts again from the beginning. Your best score and the highest stage you reach are kept too, so after a game over you can start again from that stage.
